Photographic Mystique of Live Music: Bon Ton L’Roy

Sound. Light. Action. Energy. Live music, whether performed to 10 patrons in a coffee shop or 60,000 fans in a stadium, generates a creative atmosphere that begs to be photographed. Often overlooked, the venue can have a profound effect on both the performers and audience so having been on both sides of the stage, my eye is drawn to capturing the energy of the spectacle as it unfolds within a space.

On a brisk night in December 2022, we dropped into a small Louisiana-rooted restaurant in Monterey, Bon Ton L’Roy, to try the Southern fare and take in a little local music. Once again, Monk and the 66 was there along with another local performer (whose name I don’t remember). Anyhow, it was fun listening to music in a makeshift supper club.

Visually, the place said “black and white” to me and looking at the photos, everyone seemed to be moving all the time.
